As they continued, they soon came upon another door, similar to the first one.

Again, James and his women were on their guards as they gently opened the door.

Inside, they found themselves in a large chamber; the walls lined with dusty shelves long empty.

“Look!” Sara exclaimed.

Her sharp feline eyes had seen it before James’s did.

Gleaming gold. Treasure!

“Hold on,” James said, blocking the way for Sara, who was just about to dart forward. “Let’s check if it’s safe before we investigate.”

Sara and Astra nodded, staying behind as James scanned the room with his flashlight. It was difficult for him, too, to contain his excitement and not focus his gaze on the gleam of loot on the table in the center of the room.

But he focused, trying to look for loose stones, pressure plates, tripwires, or other mechanical marvels that would herald their doom.

And when he found none of those, he reached out into the room with his heightened senses, trying to seek the streams of High Magic to discover any traps of a more arcane nature.

But he found nothing.

“It feels safe,” he said. “But let me go first.”

The girls held their breath as he stepped forward, feeling his way with his staff and testing the way to the table in the center of the room.

But after nothing happened, he found himself standing at the edge of the table, and he could finally afford himself to look at the treasure more closely.

It was no dragon’s hoard; just a modest-sized chest — no larger than a doorstopper of a paperback novel.

But it was filled with treasure.

Coins glittered in the light of his flashlight — silver and gold and copper.

“Come,” he said to the girls without looking over his shoulder, beckoning them to step forward.

Sara darted forward, always curious, and was the first to stand beside James to inspect the treasure.

Astra came more calmly. She descended from dragons and had inherited their love of gold. But despite that, she was cautious and well in control of herself.

As they came to a stop next to him, Sara’s eyes widened with excitement, while Astra simply snorted in silent appreciation of the treasure.

“This is incredible,” James whispered, his eyes darting from one glittering coin to the next.

“This must be worth a fortune,” Sara murmured, bending forward to bring her face close to the pile of coins, going cross-eyed as she focused on one of them.

James wasn’t sure if it would be a fortune. There was gold and silver, sure, but the copper coins held less value. And the chest itself was small. Besides, there was no way right now to tell if the gold and silver was very pure.

Still, he thought. This is going to solve some money problems instantly.

Of course, there was another aspect to the treasure. One that he found very interesting.

“Here,” he said, handing his flashlight to Astra. “Hold this for a moment so we can inspect the coins. I want to know where they come from — where they were minted and when.”

Astra took the flashlight as James picked up one of the golden coins, turning it around in his hand.
